How to fall in love with Siargao

I was always curious about the beauty of Siargao. I saw the breathtaking photos of the island all over social media and I was intrigued why travelers would claim that they find themselves staying in Siargao for a longer period of time than what they initially planned, some even relocated to this tropical paradise.

To my surprise, I had the same sentiments with most tourists visiting Siargao. It was a quick 5-day trip but I fell in love with the island and its people. Its something unexplainable but the place is magical and you will want to keep coming back.

The island itself is already easy to fall in love with but here are some things which will make you fall in love with Siargao even more:

1. Stay at Bravo Beach Resort

If you want a chill vibe, stay at Bravo Beach Resort. They have double rooms, family rooms and even a dorm-type room. Their alfresco restaurant also has full-sized day beds where you can hangout and relax.

Insider tip: Avail of their breakfast – they serve some of the best dishes in the island!

2. Go island hopping – Naked, Daku and Guyam Islands.

Insider tip: Book your island hopping tour in Bravo Beach Resort because they have affordable packages inclusive of all the boat fees, lunch, drinks and recreational activities. (Php 1,000/pax)

Naked Island – don’t forget to put on sunblock because there is no shade in this island.

Daku Island – enjoy lunch in one of the cottages or bask in the sun and play beach volleyball 🙂

Get ready for a yummy boodle fight lunch!

Guyam Island – picture perfect spot for climbing coconut trees!

3. Check out the island food scene

The stretch of General Luna has a lot of restaurants that offer different types of cuisines from local to international dishes.

My best picks are:

Mama’s Grill – This resto is jam-packed especially during dinner time so make sure you arrive early. They have all kinds barbeque, grilled veggies and fruit shakes.

Bravo Beach Resort – Bravo serves Spanish cuisine and they also have a special vegetarian menu. Order their cult favorites hummus and patatas bravas.

Shaka Siargao – This is the perfect place to kickstart your day before surfing. Chill by this cafe located a few meters away from Cloud 9 and order their instagram-worthy acai bowl.

4. Surf some waves!

Siargao isn’t called ‘Surfing Capital of the Philippines’ for nothing. You have to catch some waves! Whether you are a pro or a beginner surfer, Siargao has different surf breaks for all skill levels.

Insider tip: I personally like the surf spot called Cemetery (intermediate skill level). It’s a 15 minute boat ride from the shore. The surf break is not crowded and it feels different to ride some waves in the middle of the ocean. 🙂

Sunrise surfing!

Here’s a surf break near Cloud 9 intended for beginners, Jacking Horse. I don’t prefer this surf spot because there are too many corals around the area and a fall will leave you with scratches all over your body.

5. Make new friends.

The locals are warm and friendly. Everyone greets you with a smiling face especially the kids. Meet a local at a cafe or at a surf break! 🙂 Tourists (mostly foreigners) are also friendly too! You’ll be amazed by their stories – most of them never want to leave Siargao and consider the place as their home.

I just can’t help but fall in love with Siargao. It has become one of my favorite destinations in the Philippines and I will surely come back for the second time or third or fourth… 🙂
